As the satellite radio craze continues to grow, more and more services are coming on board. Many of these offer a selection of listening options that’s expansive enough to put FM and AM stations combined to shame. One such service is Sirius satellite radio.

Sirius satellite radio offers a lot of the same things that other satellite providers do, but it has a few twists. Let’s go over the basics about satellite radio and then mention those twists.

First off, Sirius satellite radio, like other similar services, is offered on a subscription basis. This means those who want to be able to tune into the channels must pay to do so. Those who have can choose to receive the signals in their automobiles, offices, homes or even online. There are a variety of options on this front, making sure those who want to can listen to Sirius satellite radio just about anywhere.

The reason subscription services like Sirius satellite radio are so popular is the fact they can offer a variety – both censored and not – of everything from children’s music and pop to classics, comedy, news, weather, traffic and more. There’s no shortage of stations on services such as this.

Developing in a similar fashion to cable television, satellite radio providers like Sirius satellite radio have been able to cater to niche markets, as well. Since they have so many station possibilities open, they can include a variety of narrowly focused channels that FM and AM just can’t support. These options include such things as folk music, specialized talk radio and more. There are even stations dedicated to nothing but children’s music, pop, Top 40 and beyond.

Now, for those Sirius satellite radio twists mentioned earlier. This particular satellite radio provider is known for not only its music selection, but also its talk show hosts. With a reach that spans from Martha Stewart to Howard Stern, it’s little wonder these types of services are drawing niche crowds.

Another draw for providers such as Sirius satellite radio is the fact many of them give their customers automatic Internet access to all the programming. This means listeners can buy receivers and subscriptions for their cars and still listen at home or the office via computer speakers. This is a nice perk that many enjoy taking advantage of.

Sirius satellite radio is known for its expansive variety and the number of options subscribers have for actually tuning in. The service is considered one of the best when it comes to variety.

Very often you face situations when you have people with you but not physically very close. You all have come out together but necessity takes you away from each other for some time. All of you may need each other any moment. So, a means of communication is a must. And it is the mobile phone that serves the purpose. But it is a paid service!

You may be quite comfortable with it because it seems natural to you. If you get a service, you have to pay. Well, there is a means that can keep you connected with others within a relatively shorter range but at a much lower cost that the mobile phones. The device under discussion is two way radios: highly helpful yet very cheap. In fact, there is service charge for this. Once you buy it, it will help to give service without any charge.

Two way radios are a type of transceiver, capable of transmitting and receiving the content. Unlike a broadcast receiver that only receives content one way this device sends and receives calls both ways. This user-friendly device has a push-to-talk button that you can use to activate the transmitter. The availability of the push-to-talk button makes the radios easy to be used by kids.

Otherwise known as walkie-talkies or handie-talkies, these hand-held, portable, two-way radios are also available in mobile and stationary base configurations. Traditionally used by the police, now it is popular among the civilian community as well. The device that was once an exclusive privilege of fire, taxi and other mobile fleets are now offering valuable service to the common man.

Two-way radios come handy when you are in a mall with your family members and it is not possible to shop around together. With different shopping list, every one of the family may rush to corner that is his/her favourite. Under such circumstances, you can ensure that you all stay connected to each other through two-way radios. And that also without paying lot of pounds!

Satellite radio is becoming more and more popular as an alternative to regular FM radio, and especially for travelers who want to listen to the same station throughout their trip. Basically, you get commercial-free radio for a small monthly fee(around $13/month) and the ability to listen to the same station wherever you go in the country.

So the question on everybody’s mind is “What is the best satellite radio service?” Is it XM radio or Sirius radio? If you look at just subscribers, XM easily wins the battle with over 5 million subscribers compared to Sirius’ 3 million subscribers. However, there are a lot more options to consider when choosing your satellite radio service.

Here are some things to consider when making your decision:

Receivers

XM has the strongest variety of satellite radio receivers with the two best plug-and-play models probably being the Delphi XM SkyFi2 – with a 30 minute recording buffer(cost: about $95) or the Delphi XM Roady XT(cost: about $80.) If you want a portable option, the best one is the Tao XM2go(5 hour recording feature) – it can play broadcasts through headphones or speakers that are included and doesn’t require a docking station(cost: about $150.)

Sirius might not have the range that XM has in the hardware market, but they still have some nice equipment. The two best plug-and-play models for Sirius radio are probably the Sirius Starmate Replay – with a 44 minute recording buffer(cost: about $120) or the Sirius Sportster Replay – designed for NFL fans and it also has a 44 minute buffer(cost: about $95 after rebates.) Sirius doesn’t have a true portable satellite radio device yet but they have the S50 model which will allow you to record 1 GB of satellite radio content while hooked to a docking station so you can play it later as a stand alone device. The Sirius S50 also doubles as an MP3 and WMA file player. (cost: about $330)

Programming

Sirius and XM both have about the same amount of music stations, covering Pop, Rock, Dance, R&B/Hip-Hop, Country, Christian, Jazz/Blues, Classical and Latin. Both services also share news channels such as CNN radio, CNBC radio and Bloomberg radio. The big difference comes down to sports coverage and some guy you might have heard of….Howard Stern. Sirius signed Howard Stern to a blockbuster deal that will be sure to boost subscriptions for them.

Sirius also has a stranglehold on sports radio with exclusive rights to NFL broadcasts, NHL, NBA and rights to NASCAR in 2007. XM currently has exclusive rights to MLB baseball and NASCAR until 2007, they also have a lot of college football broadcasts. If you’re a sports fan at all, you’re going to want Sirius for their wide coverage of sports.

Costs

Currently both Sirius and XM radio services cost approximately $13 a month. Other costs you have to consider is in the accessories that go with the satellite receiver you choose. Docking kits for the home or car(if not included) can add about $100-150. Headphones and external antennas are other accessories that should be considered.

You can only expect the costs to decrease as satellite radio becomes more and more popular. All in all, satellite radio is an inexpensive option to get commercial-free, static-free, uncensored radio that you can take with you anywhere in the country and listen to the same station.

Amy Lee Johnson writes for a website called Best Satellite Radios that reviews all different types of satellite radio receivers, including tons of Sirius Satellite Reviews and XM Satellite Reviews.

How does satellite radio work? To understand how satellite radio works you must first understand how analog radio works. Analog radio works by broadcasting the radio frequency to local transmitters and then on to the listener. Satellite radio works similarly but instead of using stationary transmitters with limited range to broadcast their media to the people, they use mobile Satellites.

Satellites are equipment that orbit the earth and can pick up and transmit signals globally instead of just in a limited area. In the satellite radio category a satellite bounces the transmitted radio frequency off of the satellite and out to the millions of satellite radio listeners around the world. This has increased the satellite radio industry and has made satellite radio a staple media avenue in our everyday lives. Does this help you to understand the question of how does satellite radio work?

A user such as myself or you, who is interested in satellite radio purchases a satellite radio device whether it be stationary or portable, we purchase the desired satellite radio service from whichever service provider offers us the best variety of programming. Once the subscription to this service is established, the device is programmed into a database of devices that are allowed to receive specific radio transmissions from specific satellites. This entry into the database then sends a signal to the device to decrypt satellite frequencies, providing the user with audible satellite radio reception. This explains the question of how does satellite radio work?

Many service providers may use different marketing gimmicks to gain a customer base, claiming to have better coverage or what not. When it comes down to it, The only difference which could be considered is the limitations put on the satellite radio by the databases and what programs and filters any individual service provider may be using to limit the access their customers have to the satellite radio feed. Service providers may offer special features, or special programming which is solely controlled by their databases and the servers they use to transmit the satellite radio feed. You rarely hear of a service provider explaining to the customer the answer to the question of how does satellite radio work?

If a user fails to pay for their subscription to the satellite radio feed, just as with any utility nowadays, the service provider may then send a signal to the device, removing its rights to decrypt satellite radio transmissions. Many technologies in the past, prior to the radio technology have used satellites to widen the spectrum of their services, such as telecommunications such as cell phones. The principal of each service is relatively the same in the fact that a person uses a device such as a satellite radio, or cell phone, to request a transmission through a service provider’s database. If the subscription is paid for the transmission is allowed from the satellite to the user giving us satellite capable radio devices. I hope I have helped answer the question how does satellite radio work?

Satellite Radio HQ http://satellite-radio-hq.com/ talks about the history of satellite radio, the equipment you’ll need, the satellite radio channels you can receive and much more.

If you have ever been frustrated by too many commercials on the radio or losing a station’s signal as you drive out of range, then a portable Sirius satellite radio may be just what you need. When you have a Sirius satellite radio receiver you can listen to whatever you want wherever you go.

A portable Sirius satellite receiver allows you to select from over 125 channels of music, news, sports and special programming – all commercial-free. There is a Sirius satellite receiver to meet the needs of everyone, whether you want one for your home, your office, your car, your boat, or your RV. By far the easiest and quickest to install is a Sirius Plug and Play portable satellite radio, such as:

•Starmate– A compact satellite receiver with 30 channel presets, a wireless remote control, a complete car kit, and optional home kit

•Starmate Replay ST2 – All of the features of the Starmate satellite radio in an ultra-compact design, plus the ability to pause, rewind and replay up to 44 minutes of content; also has an alert function to let you know when a favorite artist or song is playing on another channel

•Sirius Sportster – A specially designed satellite receiver for the sports enthusiast, with alerts and notifications when your favorite team is playing on Sirius; listen to play by play of games plus the latest scores; optional car kit, portable home kit, and boombox

•Sportster Replay – all of the features of the Sirius Sportster, plus the ability to pause, rewind and replay up to 44 minutes of content; car kit is included.

What is Satellite Radio?

Satellite radio is the latest advance in technology that lets you listen to your favorite radio station no matter where you go. This is possible thanks to a system of satellites that delivers the signals, rather than traditional land-based transmitters that are limited by geography and power levels. The ease of delivery and large number of available channels means providers such as Sirius can program each channel very specifically to suit listeners’ tastes.

What are the Advantages of Sirius Satellite Receivers?

There are many advantages to portable satellite radios, such as:

•Over 125 channels to choose from

•No lost or fading signals when driving long distance

•No commercials

•Specific, special interest programming

•Exclusive specials and programming

•Crystal clear signals

•Wide variety of satellite radio receivers to choose from

What are the Disadvantages of Satellite Radios?

As with anything, there are some disadvantages to portable satellite receivers, such as:

•The need to purchase a special satellite radio receiver

•Some installation required

•Monthly subscription fee

Why Choose a Portable Sirius Satellite Receiver?

Sirius satellite radio offers listeners an amazing array of channels and choices, including music, news, talk, and special interest programming. Sirius is home to exclusive programs and features, including celebrity hosts, live concerts and listener call-in shows. Sirius subscribers can listen online as well, just by logging into Sirius.com, and Sprint PCS customers can listen to a selection of channels on their Vision Multimedia phone.

Although SIRIUS satellite radio has been a great consideration for homes, this is now offered to people on the go. Although there are many automobile companies now offering SIRIUS to customers, two in particular are taking this option to the highest level – Chrysler and Volvo. This means in addition to owning a great vehicle, consumers can also listen to satellite radio while driving right off the lot.

For the Chrysler Group, 2008 vehicles rolling off the line now have options for satellite radio, as well as SIRIUS Backseat Television. With this, vehicle owners can provide programming in the car, which is great for taking road trips. For instance, families with children know all too well that kids get bored in the car. Now children can enjoy age-appropriate programming to make the trip far more enjoyable.

With SIRIUS Backseat Television, programming is provided from only the best and most trusted stations. Children can watch things such as the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and even the Cartoon network, loved by kids and parents. All 2008 Chrysler cars and even Jeep, which is made by Chrysler has this options. Even the Dodge Grand Caravan will be rolling out these mobile televisions, which is making serious waves.

Other vehicles offering SIRIUS programming include the Dodge Magnum, Chrysler 300, Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Dodge Charger, and the Jeep Commander. Using the in-vehicle receiver along with two antennas that are mounted to the roof of the vehicle, SIRIUS Backseat Television can be worked with the simple touch of a button. The second and third row video screens display the programming of choice. Included with this display is the title of the program, the name of the channel, and even the rating, which is a huge advantage for parents. This way, they know what the children are watching to ensure little eyes are seeing only what they should see and nothing more.

Additionally, the television option can be operated with the radio head or the rear seat entertainment unit. The advantage is while families are on a road trip; the kids can be watching the Disney Channel while mom and dad in the front seat can be listening to jazz, country, rock and roll, or whatever music venue they like best in the front seat.

Volvo is also getting into the action for SIRIUS satellite by incorporating the radio system in new cars. Creating a partnership between Volvo and SIRIUS has provided a means for more and more customers to enjoy the finest listening possible. For instance, cars created in 2007 include the C70, V50, S40, and all S80 automobiles.

Consumers need to remember that Volvo has a high reputation for providing one of the best sound systems on the market. This means the Dolby Pro Logic II Surround and Dynaudio systems already installed in Volvo cars coupled with SIRIUS makes for the perfect sound. Consumers can listen to all types of music, along with news, entertainment, talk, and sports without interruption of commercials.

Bob Maines is a satellite radio specialist with several years of experience selling and installing SIRIUS Radio.

Suppose that you are in a mall with your whole family: your wife and two children. Every one of you has his/her own shopping list. You have some new books to buy, your wife is to explore the crockery items, the son is interested in the latest video games and the daughter is looking for a flashy iPod. So, there is strong likelihood that you will be scattered as soon as you enter the mall.

Under such circumstances how can you ensure that you all stay connected to each other! Certainly the mobile phone will be the first choice. But with pay-per minute charges, can this device provide you a cost-effective means of communication! Obviously not; so you need a cheaper choice. And two way radios can provide you with this. The device that was traditionally used by police has now got its access to the civilians.

Two way radios are transceiver and unlike a broadcast receiver which only receives content one way, this one can both transmit and receive the content. To activate the transmitter, a push-to-talk button remains present in the device. This hand-held portable two-way radio is also often called walkie-talkies or handie-talkies. These radios are available in mobile and stationary base configurations. In some cases, they come with push-to-talk button that make them easy for kids to use.

Motorola has a good range of two way radios that are fun and easy to use. Their push-to-talk button provides instant connection to a group. They have ten programmable call alert tones; hence callers are easily recognised. Also known as ‘dispatch radio’, two-way radios have traditionally been used by police, especially by fire, taxi and other mobile fleets. With added functionalities, these monitors are getting popular day by day. The internet provides an easily accessible market to buy these radios.

Smart phones are all the rage today. The iPhone from Apple, the Blackjack from Samsung and any Blackberry device are all popular commodities. Palm has been a hit or miss company, with some notable successes and some not so notable offerings as well. The new Palm Centro from AT&T promises the best of all worlds – including satellite radio.

The Palm Centro is a sleek smart phone with a touch screen, a full QWERTY keyboard and, get this, XM radio built in. There are also several other options available on the Palm Centro that are exclusive to AT&T. The full line up for features consists of a built in web browser called Blazer, 64MB of storage for the mp3 player (upgradable to 4GB with a card), and 25 channels of XM radio. While this is not a lot of channels (considering XM offers quite a few more than that!) it does offer portability and the ability to customize which channels you get.

You can listen to your favorite XM music, listen live sports games or check out talk radio shows right from the phone. While the phone is getting mixed reviews (the legacy of Palms’ less than stellar past offerings), the phone itself promises to compete competitively with many other smart phones currently available. The simple fact that it can double as a portable XM radio is a great feature. Combine that with its ability to stream Web TV shows, play mp3’s and more and Palm might have a winning combination.

With satellite radio being widely accepted in today’s automobile industry, it is no surprise that mobile technology is turning to incorporating music broadcasting. Over a year ago Apple and Sirius radio were in communications to include Sirius radio as an additional feature to the iPod. Although the partnership did not foster into reality at the time, the notion of consumer demand remained. We will no doubt see satellite radio become one of those features for phones much like camera, video and MP3 storage have in the past.

There are other phones in the works from other companies that promise more than this, but the Palm is the only one of its kind to debut thus far. That means consumers who want XM radio (or any satellite radio for that matter) have little (legal) choice but to use the Palm Centro.

Why hasn’t the Centro garnered better reviews? Part of the problem lies in the fact that it only operates on AT&T’s GSM network, which many consumers dislike for various reasons. Other reasons are the fact that the phone is at least $100, though with the relative price of the iPhone (which has no XM); it seems like a bargain basement price. There is a host of software options that come with the Centro, as well, making it a true smart phone, but only time will tell if it will make a splash in the market.

In the meantime, fans that want XM radio with them all the time, but don’t want to deal with Palm products can get their hands on several XM radio products that offer the portability the desire. In the meantime, consumers that want a single device (phone, PDA and radio) will have to continue to wait. Maybe Sirius has something in the works that will offer a better platform than GSM? Alas, we’ll simply have to wait and see what the media giants have in store for consumer, though with the quick appearance of the Palm, Sirius probably isn’t far behind with their offering. We could argue that the days of portable satellite radio with mobile phone capabilities are not to far away.

Up until now, you may have been a little disappointed; only reading the information on cassette adaptors and FM modulators as possible ways of playing a Satellite radio in your vehicle. You may have wondered how Satellite radio could deliver pure digital bliss to your ears. This page should show you how that is possible!

Cassette adaptors and FM modulators are mainly intended for plug-and-play receivers. However, it is possible to connect these types of receivers, and others, using a direct connection to your vehicle’s stereo. This solely depends on whether your vehicle’s stereo system is capable or not.

As far as sound quality is concerned, a direct, or hardwired connection, is by far the best option to receive Satellite radio programming in your vehicle at close to cd quality.

A direct connection simply means using special cables, or hardwired adaptors, to connect your Satellite radio equipment (whatever device types they may be) to your vehicle’s stereo system.

A direct connection can be made only if the stereo has an auxiliary or AUX audio input. Normally found on the back of the vehicle’s stereo, the AUX input uses standard RCA or 3.5mm mini-jack audio cables for connecting additional audio devices. However, some stereos provide an AUX input on the front panel, making it convenient for playing portable audio devices such as iPods, CD, Minidisc and MP3 players.

If your stereo does not have an AUX input, all is not lost: many vehicle audio systems have a data port designed usually for an optional CD changer. Although not compatible for Satellite radios, this connection can also be used, even if the data port itself is already being utilised. For aftermarket and OEM factory fitted audio systems, a wide range of multi-purpose converters and interface cables are available, allowing Satellite radios and/or selected compatible audio devices to be connected to the vehicle’s current audio system.

The majority of Satellite radios require an RCA Y-adaptor cable (stereo RCA plugs to 3.5mm mini-jack) for a direct connection. Therefore, the most common use for multi-purpose converters and interface cables, is to simply convert the cd changer data port to an AUX input. However, some converters and interface cables supply power and/or audio to Satellite radio tuners that use a proprietary connection.

The Satellite radio is controlled using the cd changer capabilities on the vehicle’s stereo, or, for plug-and-play receivers, on the receiver itself or remote control.

The only possibility of interference using the direct-connect option, will be from ground loops, these are created when audio units of any kind are not properly grounded during installation and pick up noise from the alternator/charging system or engine. Devices such as ground loop isolators and in-line noise filters can be installed to help eliminate unwanted noises.

If sound quality is of the upmost importance to you, superior quality audio cables can be used to resist any corrosion and ensure a clear signal transfer without any electrical interference, which can distort audio signals.

As most of the installation, if not all of it, is carried out behind the vehicle’s dashboard and using specialist parts, it is recommended that a professional undertake the work.

Many years ago, people didn’t have televisions. Many read the papers to get the news or listened to the radio. Just as satellite television has entered American homes, another thing has also been developed that is called satellite radio.

What is satellite radio? This piece of hardware allows the individual to listen to favorite recording artists and shows instead of watching it on television. Given that the United States is a vast place and there are various stations in each state, this also allows the user to listen to one back home hundreds of miles away.

Currently, there are two main players competing head on in the market. The first is called Sirius while the other is XM radio. Which of the two is better? This question depends on whom the individual will ask but both are doing quite well and more customers are signing up.

Sirius is the first to ever provide commercial free programming on all its music channels and has a wide array of accessories for customers to buy. This is despite that fact that XM radio launched a few months in advance.

The subscription fee of Sirius a little pricey compared to XM radio. When people want the best things in life, money maybe an obstacle. So the deciding factor will be what the hardware has to offer.

Satellite radio has been around for almost 5 years. Since this is considered to be the “in thing” in the market, both companies have tied up with the major car manufacturers to have this installed in their vehicles. This is the same thing Ipod is doing so the owner can listen to the favorite tunes while on the road.

Sirius has 65 channels that feature sports, news and other programs aside from music. This includes exclusive coverage of special events such as the NFL. XM radio on the other hand has NASCAR and Fox news. It has 68 channels which is 3 more than what the other is offering to the consumer.

The accessories used by Sirius satellite radio allows the person to listen to this at home or in the car. One of the basic accessories it uses is the Sanyo CRSR-10 Plug and Play system that will cost about $149.99. Those who are not satisfied can have this upgraded-which will cost from $250 to $2,000.

XM radio on the other hand uses the Delphi XM Roady Receiver. This will cost an individual somewhere between $30 to $400, but those who choose to get a monthly subscription will only have to pay $12.95 per month.

Both the models being offered by Sirius and XM radio are easy to install. The person will just have to pay a small fee as a service charge when enlisting the help of a customer representative when this is being done.

Customers can buy the unit in a store or order this online. It is not only ordinary individuals who are very interested in this product since there are also other models for commercial use that are being broadcasted in public access systems of hotels and other retail establishments

Is Sirius satellite radio better then that XM radio? Given that both companies have different things to offer, this really depends on the tastes of the customer.
