You have probably heard of the two satellite radio companies, Sirius Radio and XM Satellite Radio, but you may not know a lot about them such as how much each costs or what radio talent is available on each. Many people are tired of listening to regular AM and FM radio stations for several reasons. It may be that they are tired of being bombarded with commercials. It may be that they do not like the programming available to them. On the other hand, it may simply be that they are in a rural area and tired of losing their radio signal all the time. Regardless of the reason, many consumers are turning to satellite radio as a viable alternative to regular radio stations.

Both companies are able to offer you static free radio due to satellites. XM (based in Washington D.C.) has two and Sirius (based in New York) has three satellites across the United States. Both companies offer users commercial free radio. Sirius offers over 125 channels and XM offers 160 different channels. There are dedicated channels for genres of music such as jazz, folk, country and pop for diehard fans. One cool feature of satellite radio is you can see the name of the artist playing as well as the song title. So never again do you have to spend time wondering just who sang that song you just heard! There are also channels for local weather and traffic, sports, comedy, women’s issues, talk shows, even old time radio shows. Soon, you may be able to see video as well as hear audio on your satellite radios.

Digital radio has struggled to make it’s place in the market. Most of the United States does not yet own a digital or Satellite radio and the reasons are clear. The digital radio receivers are not only expensive at the present time, but you must also subscribe to one of the services available for a monthly fee. This monthly fee is more of a deturant than the high prices on the Satellite radio receivers. Many stores that sell digital radio receivers are putting up many promotions in the form of discounts and rebates to try to entice the customer into buying.

I personally feel that digital radio receivers will follow the same path that most electronics follow. In the beginning the price point will be high and as technology improves and mass manufacturing processes are improved, then the costs will come down significantly. We have seen this trend in the past on items such as televisions, VCRs, telephones, stero equipment to name but a few.

Are you considered to be in the older age bracket? If you are and someone talks about “radio”, it is most likely you think of a traditional, or terrestrial station that transmits via a large tower on the AM or FM bands.

However, if you are a little younger then chances are when you think of “radio” you will think about listening to it on your PC or workstation at work via streaming audio, or possibly satellite radio in your car. This is expensive, so this is only an option if you can afford it. Lastly you would also listen to an AM or FM station just like your mom and dad did in the past.
What if you’re under 20 years of age? You would most likely think the ‘Net streams are fantastic but, you could also like listening to “your radio” on your i-pod or other portable audio device – after you’ve downloaded the files.

Earth-based receivers, either directly from an orbiting satellite, or from the satellite to

programming is digitally transmitted by one or more space stations directly to

Radio is one of the oldest media forms in the world. Long before television existed, radio served to bring the nation together to listen to news, stories and generally enjoy a common experience. Television has largely filled the role that radio once held, but radio as a medium has grown into places that television can never completely control if the status quo remains the same.

For example, while in car television is popular, it does not have the potential offered by radio. This is due largely to our society and our mentality about driving alone. Millions of commuters everyday tune into their favorite radio shows, rather than watching television, because we’re talking about drivers, rather than passengers.

For many many years the only radio selections have been AM or FM and while each of these provide a different format some things are still the same. The static that can be found when trying to pull in that station you want to hear but just can not seem to get it in right, then there is also the problem when listening to some shows on the radio and even some music with censorship.

Censorship is fine and should be used as anyone of any age is able to turn on a radio and find a radio station to listen too and this is especially good with young children who are old enough to not be in under their parent’s watchful eye. However when an adult listens to the radio they are often looking for crisp clear sound and they want to hear the whole news show with opinions and language that may not be acceptable on AM or FM stations. They may also want to listen to music that is not acceptable on these other stations and as an adult they can choose to do so with satellite radio.
