Kenwood tested out the double DIN in-dash navigation market with the DNX7100 in early 2007. Upon discovering its success, Kenwood continued its pursuit for supremacy in the car audio industry with the introduction of three 2008 DNX Series in-dash navigation: the DNX5120, DNX7120, and DNX8120.

All three of these units feature a built-in Garmin GPS navigation system with over 6 million points of interest for maps of the United States (including Hawaii), Canada, and even Puerto Rico. In addition, the DNX units could give users voice guidance of street names and upcoming turns. The long wait is over for Canadians. Satellite radio is finally here at long last. Canadian Satellite Radio is officially available since November 2005. The CRTC (Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission) finally came to an agreement that will change the landscape of Canadian radio from here forward.

XM satellite radio was the first provider to be licensed in Canada by the CRTC. They signed a six-year deal to provide the service across the airwaves to Canadians. You can rest assured that with the initial success this agreement will be renewed when it comes due. An interesting point to be made, once the agreement with the CRTC had been signed several of the car manufacturers in Canada inked deals to provide satellite ready units in their cars.

As of summer 2008, the merger of SIRIUS and XM has been approved by the U.S. Department of Justice. All that has to pass now is the FCC approval, which will then make the merger official. Experts are stating that the merger was all but official for the last year and a half, especially considering that it was questionable if the medium could sustain two healthy competitors. After all, since much of the programming of XM and SIRIUS complements each other, theoretically the two networks could have KO’d each other out of terrestrial radio’s league. Now both companies, standing united as one, are focusing on competing against the real “villain” in this scenario: terrestrial radio.

The same terrestrial radio that has continually fined and suspended SIRIUS and XM’s most prolific entertainers like Howard Stern and Opie and Anthony. The story is certainly a poetic one, particularly if satellite radio were to overpower traditional radio in the coming years. You may wonder how likely that scenario really is. Currently terrestrial radio is a monster, a Godzilla compared to two relatively small firms in XM and SIRIUS.
